Takuhatsu Monks:

As a course of the religious training, some Japanese monks traditionally walked around villages and towns to stop by at each threshold, ask for money or goodies, and chant some sutra for those who kindly treated them.

These days we rarely see them around, however, you can sometimes meet them standing quietly at corners in big cities. They never call out to people, but only ask silently for offerings to the passersby.

Now holiday season is here in Japan too. Downtown Tokyo is beautifully decorated, people are enjoying Christmas events, and children are waiting for Santa Claus.

There, takuhatsu monks stand quietly as usual asking for offerings to help those who are suffering or in need.

And it warms our heart to know there is someone who’s trying to make children’s future brighter.

May all the children all around the world be given a chance to dream their dreams.
